James Fongheiser, BS, MS, is an independent consultant in health physics, providing assistance and services in radiation protection and licensing. He has over 30 years of experience in radiation safety, both as a consultant and in key positions with firms in medical imaging, nuclear power generation, and research/ education. As a radiation protection and licensing specialist, Mr. Fongheiser serves as radiation safety officer on multiple site licenses, performing annual program reviews, and assisting on compliance issues for his clients. He is also a frequent speaker for the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and other organizations. Mr. Fongheiser holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Biology from Villanova University, where he served as an Assistant Professor. He has completed numerous training programs and certificate courses in radiochemistry, radiological engineering, ALARA training, biological effects of ionizing radiation, radioactive waste packaging and disposal, performance and project management, among others, from noted institutions and firms, including Harvard School of Public Health, University of Michigan, Northwestern University, General Dynamics, Babcock & Wilcox, General Electric and Packard Instrument Company.

In this session, Mr. Fongheiser will:

  • Review the key aspects of Radiation Safety, from an aspect regarding personal risk, as well as patient risk and appropriate care, and proper practices and standards to protect healthcare professionals involved in diagnostic imaging with radioactivity

  • Discuss current Radiation Safety initiatives, including ALARA, IMAGE Wisely and IMAGE Gently, aimed at using the least amount of radiation to attain the best possible diagnostic images to assist in patient care and management

  • Describe relative exposures of some common events and procedures and what that means to us

  • Outline strategies for successful inspections and compliance, based on specific commitments
